“How could you have possibly gotten faster?” Alessia grunted through ragged breaths. She clutched her side from where my practice sword slammed home into her ribs. “And did you have to hit me so hard?”

Tianna, Esben, and Cal all lay around the frozen clearing we had stopped in, groaning in pain and echoing Alessia’s words. The four of them had put up a better fight than the Hand of Carus warriors, but not by much. It felt like I was one with my surroundings, my spears always appearing in the right place at the perfect moment. I dodged effortlessly, weaving through the synced attacks of my team and dancing over blows that sought to trip me.

They had all utilized the advanced techniques of their specialties, surrounding me in what would normally be an inescapable web. But their efforts had been for naught as I channeled all of mine at the same time as well. With the addition of my two half spears and array of Ilamantium daggers, I had access to much more power that made utilizing each of the advanced techniques without losing power much easier. There was still a noticeable drop, but it was far above what I had seen when fighting the Hand of Carus.

I winced. “Sorry about that. I’m still getting used to this new pathway and regulating the flow of Ilamantium. It’s much more natural in just about every way, but I’m having a hard time pulling blows.”

“Well I’ve had just about enough of being your little sparring dummy,” Esben said. He grabbed a handful of snow and placed it on his shoulder where I had elbowed him.

I heard a snap from the trees behind me and without hesitation, the world began to slow around me as I took in every detail. The blue fog that coursed through my veins surged from my core and flooded my mind, eyes, and limbs. My movements would look like a blur to an onlooker, almost as if I just appeared in a new position from where I had been a split second earlier. With the practiced ease of a trained member of the Ilamantium Order, I found four arrows headed my way from the woods.

I brought my spears down overhead, angling them in front of me to block the arrows when I caught a glimpse from the corner of my eye. Alessia and Cal both had their bows raised and were firing an arrow at me as well. Even with all my advantages, there was no way I would be able to block six arrows with my two half spears, and I was already committed to a block, my weight shifted far forward in my stance.

The arrows drew closer as I looked at my Ilamantium half spears falling to block them. I had evaded two of the four coming from the woods with my spears leveled to block the other two, but that was before Cal and Alessia had shot.

I could see that I would just miss the other two arrows by a few inches, but that was all that was needed to end a battle.
