Over the next few years, your health is likely to be your biggest stumbling block to survival. Hopefully post doomsday enough people will survive to start rebuilding “normal” lives once again at some point, but how long will that take? What happens if every single doctor dies in the meantime? You can’t expect there to be any form of medical care for you after doomsday. You will have to take care of matters yourself.
Firstly you need to start looking after yourself as much as possible now. If you are unfit, then use the time you have now to reverse that position. You need to be as fit as possible when the time comes.
Doomsday is no excuse to eat badly. Fruit and vegetables will come in a tin, you need to have a good stock of them and then you need to eat them. In addition, your store should have a good supply of vitamin supplements; these must be taken on a regular basis. As they say, prevention is always better than a cure.
If you take regular medications, then you need to find a way to stock up on them as soon as possible.. You might look at the options of purchasing more privately on the internet; you need to be aware of legal issues surrounding this of course. Always know the location of the chemist, on the way to your location it may well be worth stopping off to stock up on your essential medications (we aren’t talking a shopping trip here, you walk in get what you need and leave.) It is pointless turning up at your location knowing that you only have medication to last you 40 days. Learn the locations of manufacturing plants and distribution centres for your medications, in time you may have to visit them.
A chemist should be a regular place you visit as you create your stock pile. You will need basics such as anti-septic washes and creams, plasters, bandages, headache pills, tampons, cough mixture, sore throat spray, etc. If you can see it in a chemist shop, then you will need it. You get sick post doomsday, mark my words you are on your own. The one advantage you will hold is that you won’t have contact with many people, hence colds and flu won’t be passed around with ease. Your only limit on medical supplies is really based on how much you can store.
A medical reference book might be a good addition to your shelters book shelf. However don’t fall into the trap of thinking a simple headache is a brain tumour. If you truly do develop a serious condition, there is little you are going to be able to do about it anyway. You need to look to cover the most common illnesses and any possible injuries. Learn and research how to fix your arm if it is broken, believe it or not it is perfectly possible to do. Education is key, and you don’t need medical school.
