Chapter 5 – OTHER WAYS TO GO OFF THE GRID

Apart from producing your own energy and arranging for a water supply for your home, there are various other ways to enhance your ‘off the grid’ lifestyle.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN GAS:

Instead of using the fossil based natural gas, you can cut off your gas bill altogether by setting up your own biogas generator. A biogas generator uses household, organic waste, such as grass clippings and cow dung, to produce your own gas for cooking, lighting etc. It works in the same way as a biogas plant.

The waste decomposes, producing methane and carbon dioxide gases, inflating the rubber bladder with the pressure that is required to supply a gas stove. Approximately one hour of cooking fuel can be produced from 20 pounds of grass but food waste can generate slightly greater amounts of biogas per pound than that.

However, most people have an easy access to grass clippings in larger quantities so it is more readily used. Fresh manure from a cow is commonly used in farms for methane production, despite its relatively low yield per dry pound.

Using wood is yet another way to produce your own gas for cooking, or using earth ovens for baking. Trust me; this is how your great grandfather spent his life. There was no ‘on the grid’ living back then. Solely ‘off the grid living’.

The only difference is that it was not called that back then, but only ‘living’. But again, as Shakespeare put it: ‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.’
