KITCHEN AIDS

WHEN THE BEE STINGS …

Grab the garlic. Mash up a clove and apply it to the irritated area.

Don’t have garlic? Use a slice of onion.

No onion? Then crush some mint leaves and they’ll bring relief.

WHEN YOU’RE BUGGED BY BAD BREATH …

To be up close and friendly again, chew raw parsley, fennel seeds, or any kind of mint leaf.

YOUR ZONE OF TRANQUILITY

Your kitchen is one room that deserves a zone of tranquility that sincerely celebrates your special identity and your connection to nature. Your zone should be so rich with meaning that it beckons you into your kitchen and encourages you to take your time as you prepare your meals instead of rushing through with unhealthy shortcuts.

Your zone of tranquility can assume many forms in your kitchen, but it belongs in the gateway to the gods, which is the northeast quadrant governed by the soothing element of water. Your special display can hang from the ceiling and move gently like a mobile. It can be on the floor, on a windowsill, or on the wall. (In the Southern Hemisphere, your zone of tranquility belongs in the southeast quadrant.)

A young lawyer planted tulips, perennials that express their own rhythm of life, in a copper cooking vessel, which she placed on her counter near the northeast corner and close to her sink. She covered the soil with wood and metal buttons that were part of a collection started by her mother. She hung three blown-glass doves, which are the symbol of peace, on different lengths of blue ribbon from the ceiling directly above her tulips to complete her lovely zone (see Figure 42 ).

You don’t need to be an artist to create your zone of tranquility. Your choices just need to come from your heart so that the display connects to you. As you focus on your display, try to let go of your worries. They keep you from relaxing and realizing a state of inner calm. These worries are also so mentally exhausting; they are one reason why cooking seems like one more chore. While cooking, you may need to reconnect with your zone when a wrong thought steals over you. Focus on the meanings attached to your display until the errant thought slides away and you are back in the now where you can unwind as you resume the rituals of cooking. Your preparation of a meal connects to creation and preservation. Creating healthy dishes maintains your body’s well-being. The rhythms of cooking ease your tension, and this nourishes your mind and your soul. You feel good long before you sit down to enjoy the fruits of your creativity.
