The Law

EACH YEAR IN THE United States we set aside the first day of May as Law Day. An annual presidential proclamation encourages us to be aware of the important part that the law and the courts play, in the spiritual and social values so highly prized in this country. The national commemoration of this day began in 1958. President Eisenhower and President Kennedy both felt that an annual reaffirmation of our faith in the rule of law would greatly improve the daily lives of all Americans. And it has been strongly urged that appropriate recognition be given to this idea in the churches, schools, courts and various other meetings of public and private organizations. In his message to congress in 1904 President Theodore Roosevelt said, “No man is above the law, and no man is below it.”

Of course, the big problem of nations and individuals is not alone in understanding the law, for we frequently have difficulty in obeying those laws that we understand perfectly and that were made exclusively in our interests. What a challenging idea to think of developing a discipline and a love of order that would enable us to always obey every detail of the law! What would it be like to live in an America where we had no lawbreakers? Then there would be no crime, no sin, and very few other problems. Everyone would then have complete confidence in everyone else. Our taxes, medical bills, court costs, and other expenses would be drastically reduced and we would have sufficient wealth to supply ourselves with every possible luxury and convenience.

If such an attitude were held in every nation, we would soon have God’s paradise in operation upon this earth. On the other hand if our lawlessness increased substantially, then anarchy would take over the government as well as our individual lives. One of our greatest blessings is that God believes in law. The universe itself was created and is operating according to law. We can depend upon the orderly movements of the planets and the return of the seasons. In our own interests, we can utilize the important laws of gravity, electricity, light, health, morality, heredity, growth and faith. God has given us certain rules called the laws of health by which our minds, bodies, and spirits are kept at their maximum of effectiveness. The laws of happiness are to the effect that when we do our best we feel a spirit of joy and enthusiasm, but when we violate our conscience, injure others, or allow hate and evil to grow in our hearts, then we are depressed and miserable. Heaven itself is a place of joy because it is a place of law, order and righteousness.

The scriptures tell us that “sin is the transgression of law” and that no sin is permitted in the presence of God. Consequently there is nothing there that can cause unhappiness. We might give ourselves a boost in the right direction in our imaginations by putting ourselves in
