CHAPTER THIRTY

The large sign over the entrance of the Bulldog gym depicted a large dog of the bulldog variety growling at those about to enter. The gym was in a warehouse in the old dock area of Galway close to the Spanish Arch. Fiona and Tracy had walked from Mill Street, joining the mass of locals and tourists.

They entered together and went to the reception where an attractive young woman dressed in a full-length multi-coloured leotard stood behind a desk. She had tied back her long blonde hair in a ponytail. She looked fit, tanned, and cool. She gave Tracy her thousand-watt smile which she dimmed slightly when looking at Fiona. The plastic disc pinned to her chest indicated her name was Lindy.

‘Hi.’ Fiona used her cheery voice. ‘My boyfriend has put on a few pounds lately and we’re looking for a gym for him.’

‘You’ve come to the right place.’ Lindy pushed a button and the turnstile that barred entry buzzed.

Tracy pushed the turnstile and both detectives entered the body of the gym which was the weight room. The gym was enormous and encompassed the whole bottom floor of the warehouse. More than thirty people were exercising and there was a good mix of women and men. Heavy metal music was pumping through the loudspeaker system

Lindy leaned into a microphone. ‘Andy needed at reception.’ She smiled at the potential clients. ‘Andy shows new clients around.’

Andy turned out to be a well-muscled young man wearing a singlet and shorts to set off his well-developed torso and legs. Fiona looked at Tracy and Andy standing side by side. She guessed that Tracy weighed somewhere around seventy-five kilos. Andy was more like one-ten and he made Tracy look like a dwarf. Fiona examined his pectorals and thought she saw muscles on his muscles.

‘Hi, guys.’ Andy introduced himself as the bull-goose trainer. His accent was mid-Atlantic. ‘I have a class in fifteen minutes so, let’s get on with the tour.’

They started in the gym proper where Andy described the exercise machines and the various pieces of equipment. They moved on to a large room where an exercise class was taking place before Andy showed them the changing rooms, the sauna and the jacuzzi.

‘Either of you guys into martial arts?’ Andy was leading them up a flight of stairs.

Fiona nodded. ‘A little.’

Andy stood back and looked at her. ‘You’ve got the look of someone who can manage herself.’

They entered a large room at the top of the stairs. There was a boxing ring at one end where two young men were sparring. A couple of heavy bags hung on one side and lighter ones on the other. A dozen young men were practising punching and skipping. Jack Moran was sitting at a table watching the sparring.

‘Sorry, guys,’ Andy said, ’I gotta split. We’ve got a juice bar just outside and you can sample a juice on the house.’ He extended his hand to Tracy. ‘Hope you decide to come and join us. Can you make your way back to Lindy and she can sign you up.
