Chapter Fourteen

Shanghai, China

Mia stood around in the apartment for a few moments after Cassia left, trying to decide what to do. She was still attempting to wrap her head around it all. Her reality had shifted completely, going from what she thought was a normal life to something decidedly not normal.

At least, not normal to her. To Cassia and the creatures chasing them, this was just life. And apparently, it was for her now as well. That was a lot to try to take in, and Mia decided she needed to sit for a few minutes.

The combination of the fight against the boggart and the weighty pressure of everything she’d learned over the last few days had exhausted her, and she felt like all the energy inside her had drained out. She had no way of knowing what was coming next, and she needed to take a break before it all came down on her again.

But maybe it wouldn’t. Maybe capturing the boggart was all they’d have to deal with before Cassia took her home. The bounty hunter would come back, having turned the creature in, and they could move on without any more difficulty. Mia knew the chances of that were small, but she let it buoy her spirits as she searched around the apartment for somewhere to relax.

It wasn’t the most welcoming environment now that the fight with the boggart had left it in tatters. It hadn’t really been the most welcoming environment before. But now the stacks of boxes and discarded items were thrown around, some broken, and the contents of others spilled out across the floor.

She thought she’d noticed some scurrying movements in what had tumbled out of one box, but she didn’t want to put too much thought into it. She could handle a spider or even an ambitious mouse who decided to call the apartment home. But now was not the time for her to discover a species of micro-creatures with the same attitude problem as the boggart.

Even if something tiny and strange was lurking around in the apartment with her, Mia could probably handle it. What she’d learned about herself in the last few days was confusing and disorienting, but what really stood out was the empowerment. She had discovered one thing for sure. Monsters were real and she could see them.

That meant she wasn’t losing her mind or hallucinating when she’d thought she’d seen the creature at the night market, or in the restaurant at breakfast. She hadn’t imagined things when she’d seen the tiny monsters in the tree that caught her hair and annoyed Becky into almost getting hit by a moped. Those monsters were really there, and not only could she see them, but she could fight them. And win.

This gave Mia confidence in herself and in her abilities. She could trust herself to know what was going on around her and to defend herself when she needed to.

Her only real concern now…was her father. Becky and Master Chen should be good for a little while, but her father’s mind hadn’t been messed with.
