Working Title: Journey Beyond The Stars (1965)

Story: Apes gather for food and water, and sleep together. They eat roots with the other animals. They are forced away from their watering hole by other apes so they find it difficult to survive. The monolith appears. One ape finds out how to use bones as tools/weapons. The apes learn to hunt and eat the animals they once ate beside. The apes take back the watering hole from their rivals, and beat one of them to death. In triumph, an ape throws the bone into the air.

Next we are in a future society and we watch people eat and drink on spaceships — they are carrying their air, water and food around with them into the vacuum of space. In this case, the enemy is the Russian sector. The monolith appears on the Moon, and the Americans and Russians cooperate by throwing an even bigger stick into space — Discovery 1 — on a manned mission to Jupiter. We watch Bowman and Poole eat, drink, play chess, draw. Their enemy is HAL who kills Poole and throws Bowman off his ‘watering hole.’ Bowman removes HAL’s intelligence (essentially destroys the head, like the ape bashed in the head of the enemy ape). The monolith appears in space, and Bowman goes through the star gate, witnessing the wonders of the universe. In a familiar setting, an 18th-century suite, he ages and transforms physically into a star child, then returns to Earth carrying his own environment with him — his womb.
