Chapter

Thirty-Seven

Shortly after starting the bus ride from Beijing airport toward Beitaicun, a small town about forty miles northeast of Beijing city limits, Prima realized that her earlier experience on Dragon Air had been a joyride compared to local ground transportation. Four hours later, in the fading light of the day, the only bus scheduled to stop in Beitaicun careened onto a gravel lot that buttressed a teetering industrial building.

The driver had appeared to be battling numerous psychological demons, each of which held firm but diametrically opposed beliefs on sensible driving. Randomly, the bus engine would scream as they topped ridiculous speeds. They zigzagged along heavily wash-boarded roads that, at their widest, might accompany two midsized sedans. A few minutes later, the driver would slow to a pace that allowed donkey-driven carts to pass them. To make matters worse, the out-of-control, high-speed driving only seemed to occur when both oncoming and in-lane traffic was heavy. Once the other vehicles cleared out, the driver went into sleep mode.

Sammy Chang’s networking heroics shouldn’t have surprised Prima. She doubted there were many as connected as her indefatigable colleague. Sammy had initiated an impromptu brainstorming session in his private office shortly after they had arrived at the club. He corralled his friends from his table and his restaurant manager, Coco, in front of his laptop while Prima documented ideas on a whiteboard. Within a half hour, Sammy had pinned down Walter Sie. He was en route to the club when Sammy called his cell phone.

By the time Walter had arrived—he was hosting an annual gathering of explorers who had participated in an Amazonian trek in the mid-1980s—Sammy and his team had run through his second- and third-hand knowledge of the organized crime syndicates in and around Beijing. Only three of his connections responded to their initial outreach. The responses amounted to a collective, “Run away!” No one had heard anything about Parnell’s and Liu’s expedition, but each said that they wouldn’t be surprised if they had run into problems.

Walter relayed the information he had regarding Stuart’s and Bailey’s guides, as well as the disturbingly accurate rumor he’d heard about an expedition being held captive. Two hours later, Prima was on a flight to Beijing.
