I HADN’T PLANNED ON barging in the way I did, but once I saw her I couldn’t stop myself. And I was glad for it. I was sitting at her new dining room table with a glass of whatever it was she’d served me. The last time I had real lemonade was when I was living with my grandparents in Barcelona. I took a small sip, cringing at the tart taste. I looked into the cup with a frown.
“What am I drinking?”
She laughed from the bedroom. She’d stayed in there folding clothes while I came to the dining room and took over her computer to look at the photos in the USB she’d been telling me about.
“It’s called Morir Soñando. Do you like it?”
I felt my frown deepen. “To die dreaming?”
“Yes. Do you like it or not?” she asked, standing in the doorway of her room.
She placed a hand on her hip and raised an eyebrow, awaiting my response. I tried to keep my face neutral as I took another sip. Truth be told, it was delicious, whatever it was.
“I can tell you like it, you know,” she said, her eyebrow still holding a challenge.
“Oh yeah? How’s that?”
“Your get a distinct look in your eyes. It’s like they widen a bit in wonder, and your bottom lip curves slightly.”
I pushed my chair back to stand, not taking my eyes off her. As I walked over, she dropped her hand from her hip and swallowed visibly as her gaze made its way up my body. It left a scalding trail on every inch it wandered and I felt my heart pound louder. When I reached her, she tilted her head to meet my eyes just as I brought my hand up to cup the side of her face. Our bodies seemed to be in sync, yielding to every touch. Her breathing picked up as we looked at each other, my thumb caressing the soft skin of her now-colored cheek.
“Is that the look on my face right now?” I asked. Her eyes widened slightly. If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought she was panicking. I whispered, “Tell me.”
“I . . . I don’t know,” she stammered, tearing her gaze away from mine.
“Yes, you do.”
She nodded slowly, her eyes sliding slowly back to meet mine. I lowered my face to kiss her. I couldn’t be this close to her and not kiss her, not hold her, not touch her. And even though it was a bittersweet feeling, even though I knew I wasn’t worthy of her, I kissed her again, and again, and again, until we needed to break apart.
“I don’t deserve you,” I said, a murmur against her lips. “But I can’t let you go.”
I dropped my hand and walked back to the table, taking a seat again and going back to the task at hand. I finally opened the first file of images and cringed, looking up at her again. She was still rooted to the same spot I’d left her in.
