CHAPTER SIX

HIS date?

Her heart thumping wildly, Joanna walked with Seb to the car, trying to ignore the cool strength of his fingers as they tightened on hers. Glancing briefly at his handsome profile, she remembered what he’d said about kissing her if she gave permission.

Well, she wasn’t going to give him permission, she told herself firmly. The mere thought of kissing him again made her feel odd.

She watched, puzzled, as Seb swung a small rucksack into the boot and slammed it shut.

‘Where are we going?’

Why on earth would he be taking a rucksack to dinner?

‘Wait and see.’ He flashed her a grin that did strange things to her insides and then started the engine and accelerated out of the car park.

Strands of hair whipped around her cheeks and she scooped up her hair and held it in her hand, trying to stop it flying into her eyes.

‘Here—borrow my hat.’ Seb handed her a black baseball cap which she gratefully pushed down over her wayward blonde curls.

‘Thanks.’ She squinted at a road sign as they flashed past it. ‘We’re going to the beach?’

She swivelled in her seat to look at him but he merely shrugged mysteriously, a hint of a smile touching his mouth as he changed gear and eased the car around a tight bend in the road.

Taking advantage of the fact that all his attention was on the road ahead, Joanna’s eyes drifted furtively to his firm mouth, remembering the way he’d kissed her. Despite the warm evening she felt her body shiver with reaction.

Just one kiss.

One kiss—that was all it had taken to turn her from indifferent to aware, from comfortable to confused. One kiss and she was behaving the same way that every other woman behaved around Seb Macaulay.

What had happened to the irritation that she’d always felt towards him? The antipathy? She searched her feelings for a familiar emotion—something that she recognised—but there was nothing there that reassured her. Only a kind of breathless excitement, a childish thrill that hadn’t been there before and that she didn’t understand.

Joanna frowned slightly as she tried to analyse what was happening to her. She’d never been remotely affected by Seb’s attractions until now, but suddenly she was noticing all the things that other women had doubtless noticed for years. The way his long, dark lashes partially shielded his very sexy eyes, his sharp blue gaze, his fabulous bone structure and the way his hard jaw was permanently darkened by a tantalising hint of stubble which simply accentuated his masculinity. And his mouth...

It was no wonder women found him irresistible, she thought, dragging her eyes away from his profile and staring at the countryside. She’d never been able to understand it before, but since he’d kissed her everything had changed. Suddenly she was seeing him differently. Which was ridiculous, she told herself stoutly, because, handsome or not, he was still the same frivolous playboy that he’d always been. Someone whose values were totally opposed to her own.
