CHAPTER

21

Duna took the last step, coming to a stop right in the center between the three imposing males, searching each of their faces as she waited for an answer.

She had awoken to an empty room, yet again, and would have returned to blissful sleep had she not felt that something was terribly off. As if a huge sack of rocks had been shoved down her throat and left to rest in her stomach, the tense feeling would not let her go.

Not understanding the cause of it considering what had transpired prior to her falling asleep in Cathal’s arms, she had gotten dressed and searched the camp for her formidable mate.

Only after she had failed to find him and had seen the deep blue mark around Otho’s neck had she come to the realization that the dreaded feelings that had stirred her awake were in fact Cathal’s, and that she must have felt them through their bond.

It hadn’t taken long for her to connect the dots. She knew he wanted to speak to both the Lieutenant and her father, and as luck would have it, she had been planning to visit the very man herself, as well. She hadn’t wasted any time in crossing over to the Isle and summoning Shah, the two of them flying over to the Holy City in record time, as if Fate herself was pushing her towards this very moment.

“You two know each other?” The words were almost growled at her as the Enchanter’s gaze shot from her to Cathal and back again, a deep scowl on his pleasant features.

Gone was the calm, patient man that she had come to associate with his presence, his hazel eyes blazing as flames of anger scorched her, as if accusing her. “You lied to me, daughter.”

“What? No–” Shaking her head, the words caught in her throat, not understanding the sudden change in her father’s demeanor.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Duna?” The Enchanter demanded.

Roman cleared his throat. “I’ll leave you to it.” Then marched out of the Basin, leaving the three of them alone in the closed off gardens.

Duna paid him no heed, too occupied with the man that had given her life and the livid way that he was staring at her, as if she had somehow personally wronged him.

As if sensing her inner turmoil, Cathal appeared in front of her, pulling her into his orbit where everything disappeared around them. Where nothing else but the two of them existed.

He searched her confused gaze and brushing his knuckles against her cheek, said, “I needed to talk to your father on my own, without you acting as a mediator. I’m sorry I left without saying anything.” Slipping his fingers into her hair and gently tugging on it, he dipped and pressed his lips to hers in the softest caress, taking her breath away.

It was gentle. So, so gentle.

So timid.

Laced with uncertainty, as if he didn’t know how she would react to his touch. As if afraid that she was angry with him, that she maybe felt he had lied to her and went behind her back.
