Avery, Carter, and Harrison sat surrounding an outside table at the café directly across the street from the entrance to the catacombs. They sipped coffee while doing their best to look like every other tourist as Avery passed the medallion to Harrison.

“I can’t believe you actually found this thing,” Harrison said as he turned the amulet over in his hand. “Do you have any idea how long the odds of that happening are?”

“You wouldn’t believe what we had to go through to get our hands on that,” Carter said.

Harrison looked directly at Avery. “If it was anything like your last graveyard adventure, I don’t want to know.”

“It wasn’t like that at all,” Avery said as she looked around the café to make sure nobody was watching them. “Besides, the catacombs are a tourist attraction, Harry.”

“Riiight. And I’m sure neither of you violated any of the tourist attraction regulations while acquiring this?”

Avery crossed her arms in defiance. “No, Harry, we didn’t.”

“Maybe you didn’t, but what about Indiana Jones over here? He didn’t get covered in dirt and spiderwebs walking through the tourist area.”

“I did have to explore an off-limits area to find it,” Carter conceded.

“Uh-huh,” Harrison said.

“We can talk about this later,” Avery said as she took the amulet back from Harrison and returned it to her pocket. “Any sign of our friends?”

“No. No clowns or undercover members of the Police Nationale, at least not so far as I could tell. And I was watching closely.”

“You think we really lost the goon squad?” Carter said.

“Not on your life,” Harrison said. “More likely they’re tired of losing operatives like the two they lost on the train. I imagine they are watching and waiting for us to do the heavy lifting.” Harrison pointed toward the amulet. “Finding that was a big step toward whatever it is they’re after.”

“You can bet there is someone else out there who would love to get their greedy hands on it,” Carter agreed.

“Then I suggest we get it back to the hotel and check in with MaryAnn.”

They paid their café bill and returned to the hotel without incident. Avery couldn’t help noticing that Harrison kept his head on a swivel, falling naturally into the role of protector once again. She wondered if he had reached out to his friends in the law enforcement or intelligence worlds yet.

They each returned to their respective rooms, Carter to shower and Avery to video chat with MaryAnn.
