A fter Jim made the call to the precinct for an officer to come to drop off an unmarked cruiser, Jimâs immediate next call was to Missy Logan over in cyber crimes. He instructed her to find out everything she could about John Mueller and his law firm. She said sheâd do what she could.
While Jim waited for their ride, Kerry walked to a nearby café and picked up a couple of sandwiches, water, and coffee. Jim ate the sandwich quickly, not even realizing how hungry he was until the food touched his lips.
The food was gone by the time the vehicle arrived, and Jim resigned to sipping on the coffee as they watched the buildingâs garage. There was only one entrance and exit, so it made staking out easy.
âHe might just have a helicopter,â Kerry said. âThat would make all of this pretty pointless.â
âIf we see a chopper, weâll call the FAA and see where the chopper is headed,â Jim said, and he glanced up into the cloudy Seattle afternoon, knowing it would be harder for them to follow.
âHey,â Kerry said, sitting up in her seat as she put her coffee in the cupholder. âWeâve got some movement.â
Jim watched as a black SUV pulled out of the parking lot, and Jim quickly jotted down the plates and ran them against the database. âOkay. Thatâs Mueller. Letâs go.â
Kerry pulled out into traffic, and they started to tail the vehicle.
The vehicle wasnât in a hurry, and Kerry maintained a safe distance so they wouldnât get made by Muellerâs security detail.
âWhat do you think heâs going to do?â Kerry asked.
âI donât know,â Jim answered. âI donât think itâll be anything too drastic, but it might be enough to point us in the right direction. Mueller is probably just a middle man, a broker. We need to get to someone who is actually on the inside.â
âAnd you think heâs going to reach out to that person?â Kerry asked.
âYes,â Jim answered.
âBut without a wiretap, how are we supposed to find out who heâs talking to if itâs on the phone?â Kerry asked.
âWeâll cross that road when we come to it,â Jim answered, though he already had an idea of how he was going to figure it out, but he would need some help from Missy when the time came. His phone rang. âSomeoneâs ears were burning.â
âHuh?â Kerry asked.
âNothing,â Jim answered and then accepted Missyâs call. âHey, what did you find?â
âSkipping the pleasantries,â Missy answered. âI might be rubbing off on you, Jim.â There was a hint of a smile in her tone. âSo Mueller, Corbin, and Faulk have a list of clients that are mainly corporations, which is a big red flag to me.â
âTheyâre laundering money for unsavory individuals,â Jim said. âWhat else?â
âTurns out Mueller has investments in several of Hartmanâs businesses,â Missy answered. âThey were hard to track down at first because they were all subsidiaries of Hartman Media, but some of the companies include a microprocessor company and a small telecoms firm that Iâve never even heard of before, but they have a presence in every major U.
