‘Why don’t you go and grab something to eat while I stay with Niki?’ Daisy offered.

Ajay knew she must see the look of hesitation on his face. ‘I don’t know...’ he said.

‘Ajay, you need to eat, and it won’t do you any harm to get some fresh air for a few minutes. Niki is stable and I will stay here with him. Text me your number and I promise I’ll message you if anything changes.’

‘Are you sure?’

‘Positive. He’ll be fine.’

‘I left his toy koala at home. I know he’ll want it when he wakes up. Do you think it’s okay to leave?’

He was normally so decisive, but seeing his son suffer, and the worry and concern he’d had for Niki’s wellbeing, made it impossible for him to think clearly. His thoughts were scrambled and he was looking to Daisy for guidance.

She was nodding. ‘I promise I will message you. I’ll even get the hospital to call you, if necessary. You’re not far away, are you?’

‘No. A few minutes.’

‘Go. I’ll take care of him.’ She smiled. ‘I do this for a living, you know.’

He let Daisy convince him. ‘I won’t be long,’ he said.

He really did want to fetch Niki’s stuffed toy—he knew how attached Niki was to it.

He appreciated Daisy’s level-headedness. It felt good to have someone to talk to—someone to bounce ideas off. He knew that Niki was his responsibility, his concern, that the buck stopped with him, but having someone to whom he could verbalise his decision-making process helped to crystallise his thoughts and calm his nerves.
