Chapter 5 – It All Hits The Fan
The rumor mill was churning by the end of school that day. I almost growled like Fleas when I heard that Kristy had somehow weaseled out of getting expelled. The good news was that Penny would be reinstated and graduate with the rest of us. Woohoo!
When we got to Cindy's car, I paused to look around. I could feel eyes intent on us like always, I scanned the area and caught the front end of an SUV, poking out at the end of the block. Cindy followed my gaze and saluted with her middle finger.
I glanced back as we pulled out onto the street into the chaos of a hundred students or so attempting our daily mass exodus in cars varying from rusted out hulks to some posh looking sports cars. The SUV started around the corner to follow when it was like an entire lake just appeared above the vehicle. Water came crashing down upon it.
The SUV lurched a couple times and seemed to stall as its windshield wipers attempted to wipe away the water. That was like trying to paint the great Wall of China with a swizzle stick. I turned my eyes to another set of eyes watching us and lowered my sunglasses to see Jinx looking super embarrassed. She gave a sheepish grin, waved from the hip then made a silly display of tiptoeing back around the corner of the gym.
I barked out a burst of laughter and Cindy chuckled. I asked, “What do you think she actually attempted to do?”
Cind bit back more chuckles and supplied, “Maybe something simple like let the air out of a tire? You never know with Jinxy.” Then she added, “Every spell of hers may backfire, but they always seem to have effective results.”
I nodded and grinned at the thought. It was true. She always accomplished her goal, but in spectacular and unintended ways. “How much water do you think that was? I mean, what kind of magical oomph does Jessica have to teleport that amount of mass?”
She shrugged as we turned off the side street and onto the main roads. “Dunno, but she makes a mint by hiring herself out as a channel. Even the most powerful magic workers in the neighborhood use her, so she must have a ton of power just swirling under that cute exterior.”
I cocked an eyebrow at her and pouted, “Hey.”
She chuckled and laid a hand on mine on the center console. “Hey little Miss Insecure, you're the only misfit for me, but I'm not dead. Admit it, she's not the awkward little troublemaker from when we were kids anymore.” Then she turned to wink at me quickly before returning her attention back to the road, and adding, “Besides, Jess is as straight as an arrow.”
I snorted and slapped her hand with my other but left mine there, trapping hers between mine as I started stroking my thumb across hers. “Yeah, fine whatever. She's cute. For a malfunctioning witch.
