Chapter 18

I follow Nina to her house and pull into the garage beside her car. As I mash the button to let it down, I think of something. She must have known I would be beating the door down again, because she never leaves her garage up. She learned that quickly, because I damn sure would have.

I shake my head as I take a steady breath and prepare for war. Not only am I sick of Desiree’s bullshit, but I am so sick of this hiding shit I don’t know what to do. This shit has to end.

I twist the knob and walk in locking the door behind me. Nina doesn’t even acknowledge me as I step in the room. I hear a song I haven’t heard her play in years pumping on the radio. I recognize his voice as soon as I hit the room. Miles Jay is an artist her mother loves and Nina has the same passion for the classics. I’ve Been a Fool for You is playing loudly. The lyrics to the song are killing me. As soon as he sings, “…and you’re about to lose me,” I know that is not going to happen.

I just stand watching her as I listen to the song as it blasts on repeat. Is that how I make her feel? If it is, she is totally wrong. I would never make a fool of her.

The lyrics make me want to shut the damn thing off. She just pours herself a glass of Vodka and sips it slowly as the song starts over for the third time. I let out a breath of relief. The last thing I want to do is push her to the rate she was drinking the other night. But damn this song is killing me.

I walk over and shut it off. I can’t take it anymore. She watches as I do, but says nothing. She turns her head away from me as I walk back towards her. She has not been a fool and I refuse to let her think she has. She is in love with me and I feel the exact same way. I am not leaving until she gets it.

“I thought you took care of that situation?” she questions never turning her head to look at me.

“I am.”

“Really, then why was she there? You know what… I am not going through this again with you. If there is something you need to tell me, you need to tell me NOW!” she says with one of the most serious looks I have ever seen her give to anyone.

“Nina, I swear I am taking care of it. You are just going to have to trust me,” I tell her.

“Oh I trust you… but I know you. I know for a fact that there is something you’re not telling me. I just want to know what it is… Rhys, I promise you I will ride through the storm with you as long as you prepare me for it.
