Off-Roading
âI said I was sorry,â Jamie explained again as he hobbled into the van. His two sweaters and winter jacket did not keep him from shivering. It was cold for me, so I couldnât imagine how the newbie Undrans were handling the bone chill. âI didnât think about the bond. My leg was killing me, which means it was killing you, and you just let us be in pain.â
âNext time you have to give me a heads up. What if Iâd been driving?â
âAgain, Iâm sorry. You know, toughing it out only hurts us both. Next time youâre in pain, talk to me at least, since your pain literally affects me.â
âGotcha.â I looked around as Jens boosted me into the middle bench. âWhereâs Foss? I thought for sure he wouldâve beaten us down here.â
Jens smirked as Foss emerged from the house with his hand on the small of Livâs back. âI think you may have lost your shadow, Loos.â He wrapped a thick comforter around his shivering sister and handed Jamie a flowery blanket.
âFine by me. Just be on time, is all I ask.â I noticed Fossâs pupils were dilated. When he passed by me, his cold hand squeezed mine. âNo way. Iâm not traveling with Foss if heâs been possessed by one of them. Next thing I know, heâs yanking on the wheel and pushing us off a cliff.â
Jens nodded up to Elsa, who was in the driverâs seat. âFair point. Trust is pretty thin as it is. Foss, heft it into the second van.â
The caravan was two vans long. One was full of us, plus Leif and Elsa, and the other was packed with Huldras.
Foss grumbled, but obeyed, following Liv to the second van.
Jens sat in the backseat and stretched, enjoying the luxury of the extra space. âThat leg of yours looks like it needs to be elevated, Mox. Come back here and prop it up on the seat.â He patted the spot next to him with a sly grin.
I hobbled back and kissed him. âYou must be feeling pretty good about yourself, getting rid of Foss and securing us this make-out bench.â
âYou know? I am. You were right, I needed a full night of sleep. Itâs been a while.â His arm went around me as he wrapped us in the third comforter, and we felt like us. The good us, not the bickering version.
I kissed him, snuggling into his side as we enjoyed the intimacy of sharing a blanket on a freezing winter day. âSay it again. Tell me who was right.â
âYou were, college girl.â His lips stroked mine, and I nearly forgot we were not in a private room together. âThis car ride could never be long enough, now that weâre arranged like this.â
âToo bad thereâs no partition,â I whispered, cozying myself in his arms.
Jens wiggled his fingers with purpose, as if gearing up to pull a rabbit out of his hat. âWhat would you do if you were invisible?â he rasped low in my ear.
