Chapter 1 2
The Twelve Minute Grand Spell
"Is everyone ready to set sail!" The captain gave his crew one last call, his men all cheering in response.
I looked down at the deep blue water, the giant shipping boat bobbing with the waves. A strange sense of anticipation began to build up inside me as the sailors cut the rope holding us to the pier.
Slowly, the port town of Meersalz vanished from sight, leaving only the vast ocean as our company.
My eyes wandered the deck of the ship. I noticed Saavni and Hiva sitting on the floor, playing what appeared to be a card game, while Hildbova stared out into the sea.
Since the dancer and the valkyrie were busy with their game, I opted to talk to Hildbova. Even if I knew I'd probably regret starting a conversation with the nun.
"So, how long do you think it will take us to reach the next city?" I decided to open our discussion with a question.
Hildbova shrugged. "I don't know, but I can't imagine it being more than a day since we're not crossing the entire sea."
Her statement made sense. The body of water had to be small if it were a trading route for goods. It also explained why a Kraken along such a route might pose a problem.
"Maybe if we're lucky, we can cross it fast enough without getting the Kraken's attention..." I showed a bit of my cowardice, an act which caused Hildbova's emerald eyes to drill into me.
"It's far too late to be saying stuff like that now." Hildbova adjusted her glasses. "If the Kraken does destroy the ship, please remember that women are the first ones permitted on the lifeboats."
This idiot! If the ship does go down, I'll do everything I can to drag her to the bottom of the ocean with me.
"Whatever, just don't stare off into the ocean for too long." I left Hildbova to her water-gazing and walked over to the sitting Hiva and Saavni.
"Ha! I win again!" A snorting laugh escaped Hiva before she flashed her cards. "For someone who calls herself the 'queen of gambling,â you sure suck at it."
Hiva's flurry of verbal jabs caused Saavni to lower her head in shame.
"T-that was a fluke! This time I'll win for sure!" Always the optimist, Saavni began to reshuffle the cards, preparing for the next round.
"You said that the last two times..." The valkyrie pointed out Saavni's current losing streak.
I was satisfied watching the two play their game, but it seemed Hiva noticed my wandering gaze.
"Not only are you a sadist, but also a voyeurist too? Does your depravity know no bounds?" Hiva made sure to word her comment in the worst way possible.
"At least someone is staring..." Saavni sighed, her amber eyes looking at the sailors diligently doing their work. "I haven't gotten a single lustful look or a whistle since we got on this boat. At this rate, my womanly pride is in danger."
Usually, I'd let such idiotic comments slide, but I kind of wanted to bully the washed-up dancer and valkyrie.
