Chapter 3

Grieves was a model citizen in court the following Wednesday. He handled his questions he received from his ex-accountants’ lawyers with grace and professionalism. Grieves was suing the firm for over half a million dollars in missing funds from his bank account. Thankfully when Asher left the courthouse that day the case was over and done with. Rogers & Co. had no viable way of explaining Grieves’ missing money and Asher was beaming when he stepped out of the courthouse. They’d been ordered to pay Grieves the total sum of the missing money or be arrested.

During the last week he’d immersed himself in the case once more, doing his best not to think of Samuel at all. He constantly received flowers once or twice a day the past five days, each with their own personalised note. Asher had tossed each and every one in the trash and ignored all calls to his hotel room, knowing they were from Samuel. He didn’t want to see him or talk to him; Ash just wanted to forget that night a week ago and that night eight years ago.

Rain pelted down on the front steps of the courthouse, and Asher had no way of leaving the front lobby without getting wet. He decided to just wait it out. The weather had been getting increasingly worse the past couple of days, but no one thought anything of it. Least of all Asher who just wrote it off considering that the rest of the day was usually hot and sunny.

A hand closed over his shoulder suddenly and Asher whirled around to face the culprit. Samuel's shining brown eyes stared down at him and he felt insignificant, as he used to when they were kids.

"Hey…Ash." Samuel grinned and Asher felt the urge to punch him square in the face.

"What do you want?"

Samuel feigned hurt at Asher's dismissive tone. "You look like you need a lift. Come on, I'll take you back to the hotel." Sam made for the closed double doors and then looked over his shoulder, realizing that Asher wasn't following him. "What's wrong?"

Asher's brows furrowed. Was Sam seriously asking that? As if he didn't know what the problem was. He'd started it in the first place. "I'm not going anywhere with you," Asher said firmly.

"Is it so wrong to offer my best friend a lift back to his hotel?"

Asher's eyes dropped and he was suddenly interested in a spot on the white tiled floor as his fingers tightened around the handle of his briefcase. "We're not friends anymore."

Samuel gripped his upper arm and pulled him fiercely outside into the pouring rain.

Asher fought against his grip but it was like steel. "What the hell, Kirkland?"

Sam dragged him toward a sleek black SUV and opened the passenger door for him, shoving him inside. Before Asher could get his bearings Samuel had climbed into the vehicle and was driving off. He'd activated the automated locks on all the doors so Asher had so shot at getting out.

"What
