Chapter Fourteen

Blake Saunders unconsciously streaked a line of grease down his left cheek as he looked in astonishment at the plane taxiing up the runway. “That woman never ceases to amaze me.” He scratched the side of cheek again and then picked up a rag and wiped his hands.

Ten minutes later he was even more flabbergasted as Phil alighted the plane, quickly followed by a young woman and four children.

“What the hell happened to Phil? She never takes passengers.” Blake shook his head and walked to greet his errant business partner.

“Before you say it, I should have told you,” Phil said.

Blake took in her appearance, neat as a pin and she smelled clean, too. Then he gazed at her face—drawn and tired. “Yes, you should. Is this going to be common occurrence, disappearing for days without notice?”

Phil shuffled her feet. “I hope not, Blake.”

“Me, too. I had to send young Jamie to the Xiango province yesterday. I couldn’t wait any longer since we needed the money.”

Phil shook her head. Damn, they will eat him alive at the poker table. “Sorry, Blake.”

Blake nodded and then looked over Phil’s shoulder to the young woman who had shepherded the children close to her. “Are you going to introduce me?”

“Sure.” Phil turned and smiled at Rosa. “Rosa Moran, meet my partner, Blake Saunders.”

Rosa stepped forward and smiled, holding out her hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Saunders.”

Blake smiled. “A pleasure to meet you, too, I won’t shake hands or you’ll be wiping oil off your hands for days.”

Rosa smiled and dropped her hand.

“I‘m sorry we took Phil away for so long. If I can compensate….”

“I told you there isn’t any question of that,” Phil interrupted.

Blake watched the two women glare at one another but there was something else there as well. There was a spark that had nothing to do with hate. Interesting. “I think those children need to get inside. They look beat.”

Rosa nodded. “It’s all the excitement and we have been up a long time. Thank you for your concern, Mr. Saunders.”

“Call me Blake. I can’t have a beautiful young woman call me mister. I’ll have them thinking I’m ready for my grave.” He winked at her.

“Less of the courting, old man.” Phil grinned. She took the twin’s hands and Rosa followed suit with Tao. Bang managed to walk proudly alongside Phil.

“Aye and you’d know all about that, my friend.” Blake slapped Phil on the back playfully. “Have you arranged where your friends are staying?”

“Kind of, but I guess…not really.” Phil frowned.

“Okay, let me make a few calls. I know someone who will help.” Blake ushered them inside the building.

“It isn’t cozy, but it is home. Well, I spend most of my time here,” Blake muttered. He walked to the bench that held a kettle and switched it on.

“Anyone for a cuppa?”

“Oh, I’d love one, thank you, Mr....Blake,” Rosa said.

“Do we have any coffee left or has Jamie snaffled it all in my absence,” Phil asked.

“The boy dare not touch his mentor’s coffee for fear that he’ll end up on worse runs than he already does.
