Altamaine sat in her chair in the moon room, waiting for her sisters to return. She caressed her cheek. I let him strike me, she thought.

She frowned. She didn’t really need him, of course. The idea had been to use him, like a tool. It was just that, along the way, that particular tool had become interesting to her. Should that surprise her? He was a king, after all. He was worthy of her attention. If he could see past his anger about Reyna being her prisoner and acknowledge that he and Altamaine had pursued the same goal all these years, whatever her shape, then everything would be all right. She would teach him, share her power with him—that glorious, thrilling rush of power, the only thing in the world that equaled the feeling of being victorious in battle. Of course, it had been a good decision to discipline herself all these years and not use her power around him. She wanted to be able to look him in the eye one day and say, “I never tricked you. I was a true warrior.” And he would look back at her and say...

She conjured up a picture of Randolph in her mind. He looked straight at her. He opened his mouth and said, “How can I help the one who has kept my wife a prisoner?”

She bared her teeth at the door where Reyna had been dragged out moments ago. Reyna no longer acted like a queen but lived the life of a ragged serving woman. She knew nothing of wielding power. How could such a person destroy all that Altamaine and Randolph had built together?

No. He would understand. Randolph would face her the way she was—Altamaine, who was also Lexander—and he would have the courage to acknowledge the truth. She called up his likeness once again in her mind: Randolph the warrior, with his wide brow and weathered face. She made him open his mouth and speak.

“We are the same, you and I,” he said to her. “You are my only equal, and I need you by my side now, as I always have.”

He would take the hand she offered.
