The Rules Of…

LUNCH POLITICS

It can both be the highlight of your working day, and the worst hour of your nine-to-five. Negotiating a successful lunch is no mean feat, everyone knows the crushing disappointment of a dissatisfying midday meal and remembers the spirit-raising potential of a lunch break well spent. Here are the pitfalls to watch out for to ensure you fall in the latter camp:

PROBLEM A: THE OFFICE FRIDGE

If someone suggested you kept your underpants in the same drawer as everyone else you worked with, chances are you’d suddenly see the benefits of going commando, but whereas we’d all balk at the thought of our gussets sharing space with those of our colleagues, we’re more than happy to take our chances with what goes in our mouths. Welcome to the office fridge. It’s a scary place.

1. THEFT The most common fridge-based crime is, without exception, theft. Whether it’s the sneaky pilfering of an almost unnoticeable amount of your lunch—think half a handful of grapes or an all but negligible amount of carrot batons—or a full-blown misappropriation of both rounds of your carefully prepared sandwiches, workplace fridge raiders can, and will, ruin your day. Conducting their thievery with precision and stealth, witnesses of the culprit are rare and positive identification even rarer.

DEAL WITH IT: If you’re suffering a run of lunchtime larceny, then bring out the big guns and hit the thief with a nasty surprise. Replace your usual sandwich filling with something disgusting; maybe tuna for cat food. You might not find out who the thief is (unless you sit right opposite the bathrooms) but chances are they won’t do it again.
