MORRISEY TOOK GARETH out for lunch the next day. He had been clamoring for hot dogs, so they went downtown to the Roanoke Weiner Stand. They sat at the window and let the busy mix of passersby entertain them, until Gareth announced, "Grandpa told me a story."
Morrisey cocked an eyebrow. "Oh, yeah?" She had not taken Gareth back to the cemetery, but her mother had taken him a few times, including yesterday.
"Yeah! He told me when he was little, he used to climb up trees so he wouldn’t have to come inside for dinner. His mommy called him bad names."
"Hmm." A purple-haired youth walked by, reminding Morrisey of the time she dyed her hair purple in college. "Was it really Grandma who told you that?"
"Grandpa!" Gareth hollered. "And he wants me to bring him cars to play with."
Morrisey bit into a fry. This "talking to Grandpa" business had been cute and endearing at first, but it was getting creepy. "Gareth, sweetie, your grandfather's dead. He can't tell you things or play with cars."
"Can too! Grandma said so."
Morrisey sighed. "Okay." As long as your grandfather doesn't talk to JP.
After lunch, Morrisey and Gareth petted a police horse and then window shopped. "Look!" Gareth cried as they passed a florist. "King Arthur stuff! Which one's me?"
Morrisey peered at the display, which was filled with the sprawling, colorful cast from Camelot. She spotted Arthur, the same one Charlene had gotten her. Next to him was a knight sporting a mop of red hair. "That one," Morrisey whispered. "That's you."
