Chapter Forty-Seven

MELISSA

‘I knew it,’ Melissa barked, triumphant. ‘No way in hell had Wren given birth to the baby, but trafficking? She’s really surpassed herself this time.’

This was the conversation she imagined she’d have with her mother who’d phoned to break the news. Instead, Melissa said: ‘Oh dear. What an appalling state of affairs.’

‘Quite,’ her mother said crisply.

‘What are you going to do?’

‘Act quickly.’

Melissa felt a pinch of alarm. ‘How?’

‘Pay the woman off and let her go quietly.’

‘With the baby, of course.’

‘Unfortunately, I see no other option.’

‘Surely, it’s for the best, Mummy.’ Surely, even you can see that.

‘I suppose. I was rather enjoying having another baby in the house, especially now you’ve moved out.’

Melissa refused to take the bait and embraced silence.

‘Poor Wren is beside herself,’ her mother continued.

‘I’m sorry to hear that.’ If Wren was beside herself it was with frustration and petulance. Glad to be miles away from the metaphorical crime scene, Melissa glanced affectionately at her children. Autumn was playing quietly at the kitchen table with Play-Doh. Edgar was rolling around on his play mat.

‘How was the literary fest?’

‘What? Oh that, yes. Apart from my twenty-four hour tummy bug — so annoying. Poor Daddy thought I’d gone walkabout.’

‘Why would he think that?’

‘With my head down a lavatory I wasn’t taking calls.’

‘But you’re all better now?’

‘Fighting fit. And how are you getting on without help with the children?’

‘I’m enjoying it.’

‘Good.’

The trite response suggested to Melissa that this was not the answer her mother wanted to hear.

‘And have you spoken to Orlando?’

‘Not recently, why?’

‘Shouldn’t he be informed about the Alice situation?’

‘There is no situation,’ Melissa said.

‘He’s bound to be annoyed.’

He wasn’t entitled to be annoyed, Melissa thought, though her mother was probably right. She had a knack of reading her son-in-law’s moods and foibles. ‘Anyway, Mummy, I’d better let you get on,’ she said, cutting the call mercifully short.
