Back at the station house, Lauterborn was filling out paperwork, having left the scene to Marino. While Lauterborn would later portray Schoolcraft as unbalanced, a document he prepared that night showed just the opposite. At 9:30 p.m., Lauterborn filled out a “fitness for duty” report on Schoolcraft in which he wrote that he was “fit for duty.” He noted that Schoolcraft’s appearance was neat, his attitude “indifferent,” his eyes “apparently normal,” his balance “steady,” and his speech “normal.” Broschart checked exactly the same boxes in his report, except he found Schoolcraft “antagonistic,” not “indifferent.” In neither document was there any indication they thought they were dealing with a crazy man.
Lauterborn received an angry call from Larry Schoolcraft, who had listened to everything that happened in Adrian’s apartment via the open cell phone line. He threatened to have the captain fired and indicted.
Larry Schoolcraft called Internal Affairs to emphasize that Adrian had left work because he didn’t feel well. He reiterated the claim that Caughey had threatened him with the gun and claimed that police had broken into Adrian’s apartment, assaulted him, dragged him out, and took personal possessions without authorization.
Mauriello called Nelson to say Schoolcraft had been suspended and psyched. Marino, Mauriello, and Lauterborn returned to the station house to discuss the events of the night further and decide who would undergo official interviews.
In subsequent interviews with Internal Affairs, the captain, inspector, and chief offered accounts that diverged from Schoolcraft’s account and, more importantly, were at odds with what the digital recorder picked up that night.
In the interviews, all three men went to great lengths to portray Schoolcraft as unbalanced. Lauterborn said Adrian became confrontational and antagonistic, the IAB report said. He called him “disoriented and agitated.” He claimed that when Mauriello asked a question, Schoolcraft “jumped out of his bed and charged at Mauriello as though he was going to fight with him.”
There was no indication of this on the recording.
Lauterborn claimed Adrian continued to refuse to cooperate, but he admitted that he was sick. Lauterborn recommended he go to the hospital. Schoolcraft, according to Lauterborn’s IAB statement, claimed that “there was a conspiracy against him, that he was being retaliated against by everyone.” Schoolcraft said nothing about conspiracy or retaliation in the recording.
Lauterborn described Schoolcraft resisting three officers. “As they were attempting to handcuff him, he was moved from the bed to the floor, where he continued to resist the officers’ efforts to place his hands behind his back,” the IAB report said.
Lauterborn claimed he did not see anyone hit, kick, punch, or strike Schoolcraft, and he saw no injuries. He denied that Schoolcraft was hog-tied or forced to kneel. He said he didn’t see anyone remove anything from the apartment.
When a tape recorder fell out of Adrian’s pocket, Lauterborn claimed, he picked it up and put it on the dresser.
Lauterborn told investigators he was shocked that Schoolcraft had to be handcuffed and questioned “why a cop would want to fight with other cops.”
He denied that there was ever any talk about retaliating against Schoolcraft.
