There wasn’t much I could do with Shorn’s information that night except forward it along to Fiona, Dylan, and Felicity, but the knowledge did make it considerably harder to fall asleep, leaving me consumed with thoughts about who the third victim could be and when they would be targeted. My night was not particularly restful in the end, and I woke up early to get a jump on the next day.

I made a quick breakfast, then was sure to do all the dishes since I didn’t know what time I would get home that night. For that same reason, I poured coffee into a Thermos and packed some snacks to keep me going throughout the day. I texted Fiona and Dylan that I was heading out, then tied up my sneakers, snagged my keys, and was out the door, locking the house behind me. The morning was considerably cooler than yesterday, at least for now, and I thought I could sense a hint of an upcoming storm in the air, though I hadn’t checked the weather app today.

I put on rock music for the drive to help wake me up the rest of the way, sipping from my Thermos of coffee every so often. I trolled for parking upon arriving at the University of Miami, parallel parking in one go despite the spot being rather tight. Then I got out of the car and stretched, bringing the Thermos with me but leaving the snacks stashed inside. We knew the basketball team had practice in the morning, and we hoped to time things so that we could catch them just as practice was getting out.

I found Fiona and Dylan at our prearranged meeting spot on the edge of campus. They were chatting quietly as I approached, an air of nerves hanging over them. They both turned to me as soon as they saw me, and Fiona immediately said, “A third killing? Do you think Shorn is right?”

“I wish he weren’t, but I think his theory makes sense,” I said, following Fiona’s lead and skipping the pleasantries. “We should operate under the assumption there will be a third murder to be safe.”

“How long do you think we have?” Dylan wondered as we started walking. The basketball team was supposed to be in the weights gym this morning, according to the schedule Fiona had found, which was in a different building than the court where Clay had been murdered but in the same general area where all the sports stuff was.

“The first two were about a week apart,” I said as I counted up the days. “I’d guess we have another week? Unless the killer feels pressure to move up the timetable.”

“A week isn’t a lot of time,” Dylan said somberly.

“It could be worse,” I said, trying to put a positive spin on it.

“It can always be worse,” Dylan agreed.

“If we can figure out how the killer is choosing victims, we can protect the victim and track down the killer,” Fiona suggested. “So far, they’ve both been juniors, male, and student-athletes.
