Draped over his bare chest, Alex woke with a start.

“Did you hear that?” Niles slipped away from her and out of the bed.

Even in a lingering sleepy haze, Alex could appreciate his fine naked form as he stood in a shaft of moonlight. Alex didn’t hear a thing, but she knew as a God his senses were more fine-tuned. “It’s probably the cuckoo clocks.”

As if on cue, the clown car cuckoo clock on the wall commenced its midnight performance, accompanied by circus pipe organ music from within. Niles watched the tiny clowns pile into a garishly colored car. “No, not that. I could have sworn I heard a howling sound.” Niles made his way back to the bedside.

“Maybe it is the ghost of Herr Schliemann.”

“Oh, ghosts! Scaaary.” He smiled, then leaned down and kissed her.

As the clowns completed their nightly task the music died away. This time Alex heard the sound. She pulled away from Niles. “I hear it now. It sounds like a strange moaning and scratching.”

“It is getting louder.” Niles went to the heating vent and leaned down. “It must be coming from the furnace room.” His expression turned mischievous. “Let’s go ghost hunting.”

Alex got up. “We are forbidden to go into the basement.”

“That will just make it all the more exciting.”

She shrugged her robe on while Niles threw on his crumpled suit. On the way out she grabbed an amber colored beeswax candle from the mantelpiece and lit it. She handed it to Niles and then lit its mate for herself. “If we’re doing the whole haunted house vibe, we might as well go all the way. Besides, I couldn’t find a light switch in the hallway to save my life.”

They exited into the darkened hallway and crept down the stairs. The flickering light of the candles and the strange house made Alex feel as if she were in an animated Scooby-Doo caper as they slunk down to the basement.

The scratching and sharp cries were becoming louder as they reached the bottom of the stairs. Niles grabbed her hand as they passed into the darkness toward the sound. It was as if they were right upon the source when the thud of feet rushed toward them. Niles gripped Alex’s hand a little tighter.

With the flick of a switch, the room was filled with bright white light. Alex dropped Niles’s hand to cover her eyes. Once the floaters stopped progressing across her vision, she saw Luke, who was at the top of the stairs with an exasperated expression. “Oh, Jeeves.” Luke’s voice was filled with disappointment as he brushed past them.

Jeeves had trapped a small cat in an air vent, who was scratching and yowling in alarm.

“Bad, Jeeves. Back.” Luke pointed behind him. The little dog lowered his head and complied. Luke squatted and undid the top latch to the wall vent. The cat sprung away and sped toward the stairs. Jeeves moved to follow but stopped at Luke’s stern expression. “The cat must have run into the vent, and it closed behind him.
