While you might assume that your milk will dry up and disappear overnight once you’ve weaned your baby, it may take several months for you to lose the bulk of your milk, even though you might not notice much, if any, leaking after your last nursing session. Some women, in fact, are able to express a drop or two of milk from their breasts for up to several years after weaning. The only time you’re likely to be troubled by a lot of leaking and pressure is if you wean your baby overnight—or, of course, if your baby weans you cold turkey, suddenly and permanently refusing the breast. In this case, you’ll want to wear a bra that provides plenty of support and express just enough milk to relieve your discomfort. (If you express too much milk, you’ll continue producing milk.) You may also find that applying ice packs to your breasts several times a day helps to relieve any breast pain you’re experiencing.
