1 Matriarchy, which was powerful in ancient times and still is among some uncivilized peoples, would seem to disprove that woman has always been subjected to man. But it is to say the least doubtful that matriarchy was and is something more and better than a simple consequence of the necessity to distinguish lineages in clans and tribes that are still sexually promiscuous. That matriarchy did not correspond to any actual moral supremacy of woman over the primitive social group seems to me confirmed by the fact that a greater stability of abodes suffices to make it disappear, without to the best of our knowledge any struggle or reaction by woman, and without any trace or tradition of this supposed ancient authority in the familial forms that immediately followed it.
