Harry Lamb awoke with a smile to the smell of bacon. He rose from the pile of pillows and located the pantaloons. Then he followed the smell down the hall past the front door to the kitchen. Inside, the table had been laid out for two. Tea steeped in a porcelain teapot, and two matching cups on saucers sat next to it.
“Good morning,” Liv Lee said with a broad smile. She wore a short, silk robe that clearly displayed she was naked underneath. She held two plates out, each bearing a piece of toast with a hole cut out of the center. Inside was a fried egg with the yolk side down. Several strips of nicely crisp bacon sat alongside. This was how Lamb’s mother had made the eggs when he was a child. He had not had them like that since leaving home. “Just the way you like them.”
He walked behind her, wrapped his arms around her waist, and reached inside the robe. She jerked to balance the plates as his kissed her repeatedly on the nape of her neck, while tenderly stroking her stomach with his fingertips. Just the way she liked it. She giggled.
“That tickles,” she said with a laugh as she shuffled the two of them toward the table and put down the plates. She turned to face him and wrapped her arms around his neck for a passionate kiss. Then she let go, wormed herself free of his grasp, and sat down. “Time for breakfast.”
“Where are we off to today?” Liv asked after daintily picking up a slice of bacon in two fingers, and then stuffing it in her mouth and sucking the grease from her fingers. Before Lamb could respond, she said, “I say we start with Frank. I may be able to worm something out of him.” Lamb collected his thoughts.
“The first thing is to contact Anna. She should be back at the hotel,” he corrected between bites. Liv gave an annoyed look for a moment. “We need to regroup. Where is your telephone?” She pointed to the front door.
“There’s a phone in the lobby,” she said matter of factly as she ate her eggs without emotion. Lamb noted her reticence, and took her hand. “There’s still a job to do. We need to get to the bottom of this.” She shrugged and kept eating.
“I’ll be right back,” he said, rising quickly.
“You might want to put some clothes on,” she said absently. He examined himself and nodded. He returned to the front room where he had left his own clothes, closed the blinds, and dressed. As he was finishing, Lee came in and adjusted his tie. “Don’t go without me.”
Lamb nodded without looking and made haste out the front door and down the stairs, nearly colliding with an older man on the second floor landing. He apologized and found the telephone on a small table in a niche next to the apartment manager’s office. As he picked up the receiver, the door opened.
“That phone is for residents only,” the manager said, clamping on a cheap cigar.
