§ 15. Demon King Hymn No. Six: “Neighbor”

The sacred grounds stirred noisily. There was no sign that the Sojourner’s Psalm was about to begin. Ahid’s earlier words must have flashed through the minds of the congregation.

The two-thousand-year tradition was about to end. Such an event would indeed be proof that there was no almighty god of the underground world. While the people of Jiordal weren’t about to believe him blindly, they couldn’t hide their agitation and anxiety. Restlessness was spreading through the grounds by the moment.

Just as that restlessness reached its peak, a single girl appeared on stage. It was Ellen. She raised her hand, and the fan union girls before the stage responded in kind. I had informed them of the situation via Leaks.

“Let’s go!”

“Okay!”

The fan union girls climbed onto the stage and lined up in their usual formation. I drew a magic circle over their bodies, and ceremonial robes appeared.

“Sorry for the wait, everyone! My name is Ellen, and I’m a member of the Demon King’s Choir of Dilhade. We will be your Psalm Choristers for the Rite of Sacred Song.”

The congregation looked relieved and began praying anew.

“Our country is located far, far away from here, further than you could ever imagine. We’re ruled by a man called the Demon King, and the people live in peace. We came to Jiordal to learn more about this place. The Demon King told us to look closely at the people who live in this land. He wanted us to see what you all believed in and what kind of future you all dreamed of.” She smiled brightly. “We only just arrived here, so there’s still lots we don’t know, but there is one thing I’m sure of: the people of this nation love music! Our country is the same. The Demon King of our country loves music as well.”

The fan union girls smiled cheerfully in agreement with Ellen’s speech. Each of them drew a magic circle that began playing an orchestral tune. The spell was called Synial.

“This is a song for you to learn more about our country and our Demon King. He is a great ruler who loves every aspect of all people. We are the bridge that helps convey that great love of his. That is the purpose of the Demon King’s Choir. Please lend us your ear.”

“Demon King Hymn No. Six: ‘Neighbor,’” the girls said in unison. The elegant sound of stringed instruments began to flow throughout the city. The melody reminiscent of the sky had a different ring to it in this land beneath the earth. It enveloped the city of Jiorhaze like a refreshing breeze.

The draconids prayed as they enjoyed the unfamiliar music. Their magic trembled as though they were captivated by the refined notes. What kind of austere hymn was about to begin? The congregation eagerly leaned forward to listen...

“Oh my!” the girls sang. “I didn’t know such a world existed!”

...until the sudden chorus at a completely different key was thrown in as if to ruin the mood.
