But Emily seemed determined. She tracked him down the next day, and in spite of himself Sam was kind of glad. Wicked had been unbelievably cool, and Emily was curious about all the different things the Boston show had done. From there they talked about a few other plays Sam had seen, almost all of which Emily had acted in at some point or another. Then she asked about the play tryouts.

“I heard you telling ghost stories in the cafeteria after Halloween,” Emily said as they were walking in from recess.

Sam grinned. “Yeah? Which one?”

“The one about the girl whose doll came to life and tried to stab her. Totally freaked me out! My sister collects those fancy china dolls with the painted faces that look creepy anyway, and after that …” She shuddered. “I make her close her bedroom door. I don’t want their little glass eyes staring at me!”

Sam laughed.

“Anyway, you’re really good. What part are you hoping for?” Emily continued.

Sam tripped over a backpack left on the floor and dropped his lunchbox. Grapes flew everywhere.

“Huh? I’m not an actor. I’ve never even been in a play! I play soccer!”

Emily bent down to help him gather the skittering grapes. “So do I. Central midfield. What does that have to do with anything?”

“Well, it means I don’t have time to be in some play! The tryouts for the Elite Team are in the spring, and I’m going to need to practice, like, every single day this winter. And besides …” Sam was about to say he wouldn’t want to anyway, but somehow he couldn’t quite say it. “I don’t know anything about it.”

Emily stood up and dumped her handful of grapes, as well as an eraser nub and a crumpled-up math sheet, into the trash. “It’s not that much to figure out. You tell stories—kind of like you did for Halloween. But instead of having to do all the voices, other people do some of them. And besides, you can still play plenty of soccer. I think a bunch of coaches are renting gym space every Monday and Thursday for pickup games. You’d get plenty of playing time there. That’s what I’m doing, anyway. You should at least check the play out. You’d be great as Rooster. Can you sing? I think you do okay in chorus, but I can’t remember.”

“Rooster?” Sam asked. “Sing? Um, yeah, I can carry a tune. But …” He trailed off, dumping his own dusty grapes and going to his seat. He hadn’t even looked closely enough at the posters to see what play it was. Emily followed him.

“Rooster Hannigan, Miss Hannigan’s criminal brother,” Emily said. “You know, Annie. Have you ever seen it?”

Sam nodded. They had seen it last summer in Maine. It was pretty good, with fun songs.

“I’d rather be Oliver Warbucks,” he said, without even thinking.

Emily’s eyes lit up as she went back to her own seat. “Even better! He has some great songs. So you’ll do it? See you after school tomorrow.
