This one, designed to prevent email overload, is his automated time-saver of the year. “It will let you permanently de-spam Gmail and Outlook with one broad stroke,” he says. The idea is to auto-archive involuntary subscription emails and manually look for what you want, such as discount deals, within the archive folder when needed.

The basic steps in Gmail:

1 Within Gmail settings, go to the search box and click the down arrow. Click the “Filters” tab. Enter your search criteria.

2 Choose “Create a new filter” and in the “Matches” row, enter keyword “unsubscribe.”

3 Click “continue” and select “Skip the Inbox (Archive It).”

4 Optional: Select “Also apply filter to matching conversations” (to unclutter all past emails).

The basic steps in Outlook:

1 Create a folder with a name like “Low-priority stuff.”

2 Right-click any message and click “Rules>Create Rule.”

3 Choose a name for the rule and type it in as prompted.

4 Select the conditions as prompted.

5 Select the action as prompted.

6 Save the rule.

The outcome on both mailboxes: 70% reduction of “noise” that disrupts daily focus.
