“As YOU KNOW, the real estate market has changed quite a bit. One of the biggest changes that affected us was the new federal lending rule that you can only have five mortgages. When that started we had about seven! We saw the Panama real estate market deteriorating as well. Effectively these changes shut us out of the real estate business, so we went back to the drawing board and totally changed our lives again. We still have some rental units, but we also moved back to the U.S. last year and bought a pool service company. Despite being back to work, the lessons I learned from our two-year semi-retirement still guide me today. I’ve structured my work responsibilities to three days a week and I hire employees whenever the workload reaches five days a week. It’s worked very well and keeps me focused on maintaining the freedom we enjoyed in Panama. We still keep our expenses low which allows us that flexibility. The moral of the story is to keep thinking outside the box and to take advantage of situations that life presents to you.”
