Chapter Twenty-Three
âTheyâre calling you the Marry Matchmaker!â Novaâs elation successfully wiped out any lingering distress over Rebel. And the confusing tenderness Hunter sparked.
âWho is?â Callie asked, intrigued.
âThat reporter from the Gazette? Vivian something. Sheâs dubbed you the Marry Matchmaker, writing about how your maid of honor dresses lead the wearer to their perfect match. Did you know itâs happened six times? I hadnât realized that.â
âBirdyâs kept track,â Callie said, nodding.
âMy best friend is the Marry Matchmaker! You need to start using that in your marketing.â
âI totally will.â Holy ceremony. With a moniker like that, sheâd get more business for sure. Guaranteed if Hunter and Kennedyâs sister met their perfect matches. She took a second to put positive vibes out into the world.
âThereâs sure to be more weddings next year,â Nova announced with enthusiasm, her eyes zeroed in on Hunter, like she expected him to reach groom status or else. âSpeaking of weddings, weâre all set for the bachelor-bachelorette party, right?â
âYes,â Hunter said, seeming unaffected by his sisterâs expression or Callieâs new nickname. He turned to her. âYou should come. Iâm sure Kennedy would approve.â
âAlready beat you to it, big brother. Kennedy said you are totally invited, Cal. Thereâs plenty of room in our cabin and we really want you there. Will you come?â
Hunter put his arm around her shoulders. âYou deserve a weekend away. Come with us.â
Callie blinked back tears again. These people were more her family than her own, and being included meant more than she could say. Nova had mentioned the Big Sur weekend last week, hinting she wanted Callie to tag along, but now that it was official, she couldnât say no.
She didnât want to say no. These were her feel-good people. Especially Hunter. No. Not Hunter.
âSounds good. Thank you.â
âNow how about I treat you two girls to some funch,â Hunter said, dropping his arm.
âFunch?â she and Nova said simultaneously.
âFun at lunch.â He grinned, and gah, she couldnât resist him when he did that.
She and Nova exchanged a look. âBurgers at Sutterâs?â they asked.
âWhere else?â
The three of them did lunch, and it was just what Callie needed to get over the horseback-riding fail. On the solo walk back to the cottage afterward, she couldnât stop thinking about the ambassador opportunity. She loved Windsong with every beat of her heart. She carried small-town pride and values with her every day. Somehow, sheâd get on that horse and share much more than the activity in her article. Sheâd write about overcoming fears.
Feeling better about the future, she picked up her pace. The sun disappeared behind a big, puffy cloud. Wind rustled lightly through the trees lining the sidewalk.
âCallie, wait up!â
At the sound of Hunterâs voice, she turned to find him jogging toward her. Heâd ditched his cowboy hat at the ranch, and as he came to a stop in front of her, he ran his fingers through his light brown hair. âHey,â he said.
âIs everything okay?â she asked.
âYeah, I just wanted to let you know when youâre ready to do the horse thing again, come find me.
