“Dad, I love him, and he makes me happy in a way I thought I would never be again after Steve died.” I was having a difficult time trying to explain it to my father.
“Tommy, are you trying to replace Steve? Is that what this is?” His face was unreadable.
I shook my head, “No, Dad. Steve died over two years ago.” I was getting frustrated with him, “I’m allowed to move on and be happy. Steve would have wanted that. I thought you would want that as well.” I was starting to get impatient.
“I do. It’s just that you’ve only known him a few months.” He sounded a little hurt himself.
“Dad, sit down.” He sat on the bench in the garden. “I know you’re concerned, but I have my eyes open. I see him for who he is, and I truly love him.”
“I know you do. I’m just concerned. You’re my son, and I don’t care how old you get, I’m still concerned, and I still worry.”
“I know. Don’t worry.” I hugged him tightly. I still couldn’t help wondering if there was something else he wasn’t telling me.
Later, when I was talking to Mary, she told me she thought Bill was really nice. “Just be careful and don’t get hurt.”
I knew they were concerned for me, but I couldn’t help being a little disappointed that they were more afraid of me getting hurt than they were glad I was finally happy again.
At the end of the evening, Bill and I were exhausted. I hadn’t had a chance to talk to my dad again. I figured he’d come around with time. He and Steve had been great friends, and maybe he was still grieving for Steve. We drove back to the hotel and collapsed into bed.
We spent the next two days of our vacation seeing the Washington Monument, the memorials, and the National Air and Space Museum, wandering around Washington, D.C., enjoying ourselves and being together. On the afternoon of the second day, I took Bill to DuPont Circle. We wandered through the gay bookstores and went to one of the leather stores.
