The Holy Family (1845) A polemical attack on Marx’s former friends in the Young Hegelian movement, the book was sub-titled Critique of Critical Criticism: Against Bruno Bauer and Company and was his first collaborative work with Engels. Marx had grown impatient with the Young Hegelians’ failure to follow him down the path of ‘profane communism’ and denounced their ‘spiritualism’ and ‘speculative idealism’ as the most dangerous enemy of ‘real humanism’ in Germany. Philosophically, the book is interesting for its restatement of the alienation theme that had been central to the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844. One development of this is the acknowledgement that the propertied class also suffered from alienation, but whereas those with property feel strengthened and at ease with this alienation, for the working class it means an inhuman condition, a ‘contradiction between its human nature and its condition of life’. Marx reiterates that this loss of humanity can be recovered through revolutionary action, and he also claims that a large part of the French and German working class had already developed a consciousness of its historical emancipatory task. He predicts that the working class will be ‘historically compelled’ to engage in the struggle against all the inhuman conditions of life. Marx also developed his criticism of the illusory nature of freedom in civil society. This appears to offer the greatest freedom and independence to the individual, no longer constrained by common bonds, but this surrender to market forces instead produces a new form of ‘fully developed slavery and inhumanity’. The reality of the individualistic slavery of civil society stands in contradiction to the communal ideal of a democratic representative state.
