For modern readers, pastoral has, to put it mildly, gone out of style. There are good reasons for this. Pastoral plots consist largely of handsome shepherds pining for virtuous shepherdesses in, well, pastoral idylls, grabbing any excuse to pull out a lute and belt out a bit of the poetry known as an eclogue.
