For modern readers, pastoral has, to put it mildly, gone out of style. There are good reasons for this. Pastoral plots consist largely of handsome shepherds pining for virtuous shepherdesses in, well, pastoral idylls, grabbing any excuse to pull out a lute and belt out a bit of the poetry known as an eclogue. Here are some lines from an eclogue:

Hair, what changes

I have seen since I saw you

And how badly this green

Color of hope suits you.

I once thought, hair,

Although with some fear,

That no other shepherd

Was fit to be near you.1
