The next school day was more of the same, except Theo made their return. We fought our way through the halls, and I struggled to pay attention, mind wandering to my appointment and what kind of news I might get that day. At least I had all my homework finished this time, and the teachers didn’t seem to notice how absentminded I was during classes.

It was time. Monica pulled up to the clinic and we walked inside, Theo holding my hand the whole way.

Monica approached the desk. “We have an appointment for Alexandra Kensington.”

I winced a little, associating my full name with my mother’s anger. The lady at the desk handed Monica a clipboard with some paperwork and we went and sat down in the waiting room. She showed me the papers.

“Fill out what you can, honey. It’s okay if you don’t know everything.”

I took the clipboard from her and scanned over the papers. I paused at the gender question, grinning and tapping Theo’s shoulder. “Look, there’s a non-binary option!”

“Seriously?” They snatched the sheet, a smile gracing their face to match mine. “That’s so cool.” Laying an arm across my shoulders, they handed me back the clipboard and I went to work filling it out.

Before I was done, a woman called my name. I got up and followed her, Theo trailing behind me. Monica stayed back in the waiting room. The woman, who I assumed to be a nurse, led us through some winding hallways of exam rooms before stopping in front of a station.

“We’re just going to take some vitals on you.”

I nodded, handing the clipboard to Theo to hold as the nurse took my blood pressure, weight, and pulse. Then, the nurse led us to an exam room and gestured for us to sit down. I sat on the exam table, paper crinkling as I moved. Theo sat in a small chair in the corner. The nurse handed me a gown.

“Please change into this, and the doctor will be right with you.” The nurse smiled as she left.

Theo turned around to face the corner and covered their eyes. I snickered at them.

“It’s not like you haven’t seen me naked before.”

“I know, but it feels weird now. I’m just gonna let you change.”

I rolled my eyes, pulling my shoes and socks off before unbuttoning my pants and pulling my shirt over my head. I put the gown on and tied the strings. “Okay, you can look now.”

They turned around just as we heard a knock on the door.

“Come in,” I said, sitting back down on the exam table.

The doctor who walked in was a small brunette woman with a few visible tattoos on her arms. It occurred to me that I’d never seen a doctor with tattoos before. I thought it was pretty cool. She had a calming air about her that instantly put me at ease and I relaxed my posture a little.

“Alexandra?” she asked.

“Alex,” I nodded.

“Okay, Alex. I’m Dr. Sherwin. Is this your first time at a gynecologist? And who’s this?” She glanced over at Theo briefly.
