Entering the room again, ready to settle in for the night, Scarlett thought to grab Dylan’s present out of her suitcase while he was in the bathroom. She wanted to have it ready to give him the following morning.

Scarlett looked through the suitcase, pushing aside anything that could be in the way. No. Her stomach dropped. It wasn’t there.

“No, no, no,” she muttered, tears pricking her eyes.

“Scarlett?” asked Dylan, looking concerned as he watched her search desperately for something.

She was shaking her head, muttering no over and over. She didn’t reply, a sob escaping her.

“Scarlett,” he said, upset to see her crying. He immediately pulled her into his arms, and she buried her face against his shirt.

“I’m sorry,” sobbed Scarlett.

“About what, sweetie?” he asked, confused.

“I left your present at home. It’s not here. I don’t know why. I thought I packed it,” sobbed Scarlett.

“Oh. Scarlett. It’s okay. I don’t need a present. I have you, and you’re the best present ever,” he murmured, rubbing her back.

“But look at what you did; you did all of this!” sobbed Scarlett. “I can’t believe I didn’t remember to pack your present. I was waiting so you wouldn’t see it, and then I was going to put it in underneath everything.”

“Scarlett. I’ll still get it when we get home. It’s fine. It’ll be something to look forward to,” he soothed, kissing her tear-stained cheek.

“All I wanted was to spend time with you, to see you smile,” said Dylan, wiping away her tears with the pads of his thumbs.

“You make me smile every day,” said Scarlett. “I wanted to make you smile.”

“That’s all I’ve done every day. I smile every day because I’m the luckiest man in the world that you’re my wife,” said Dylan, kissing her.

Scarlett chuckled softly. “I still wanted to give you your present,” she said.

“And you will,” said Dylan gently. “I can’t wait. It’ll be extra special when we get home. I’ll have that to look forward to.”

Scarlett nodded, hugging him tightly. “I love you,” she said.

“Really? I hadn’t guessed,” he teased.

Scarlett giggled, not moving from his embrace, and he kissed her hair.

“I don’t need presents to know that you love me, beautiful,” said Dylan.

“You still deserve all the amazing presents in the world,” murmured Scarlett.

“I got two of them, the best ones,” said Dylan. “Best presents ever, my beautiful wife and daughter.”

Scarlett beamed, hugging him tighter. “You’re the best present ever. You and Natasha,” she said.

“I know. Come on, don’t cry. We’ve had such an amazing first night here. I didn’t want you to cry. Come to bed and get some rest,” said Dylan, taking her hand and leading her to the bed.

“I’m going to go wash my face,” said Scarlett, smiling. “Get in bed, and I’ll be right there.”

“Okay,” said Dylan, kissing her softly.

She squeezed his hand and disappeared into the bathroom, washing her face and making sure it didn’t look like she’d just been sobbing. She put on some night cream, lip gloss, and a spritz of perfume.

“Hi beautiful,” said Dylan from the bed, shirtless as he leaned on one elbow to watch her change.
