Chapter Sixteen

Lily heard the change as the office went silent. They were all here this Thursday morning. Jordan had been chattering to Greg, their sports guy, about a technical problem they were having on the website, and Ken had been talking to Ilsa, who had gotten back yesterday, her father safely home and recuperating.

She looked up from the email she was answering—she’d been inundated ever since the party coverage had gone live, and her social media feed wasn’t to be believed—to see everyone had gotten to their feet. She saw them looking toward the front door, all with a sort of respectful awe. So it wasn’t a huge surprise when she saw Shane. Even through the glass door she could see he looked less haggard, as if he’d finally slept.

Which also put him back in the category of pure hunk, but she was trying to ignore that. Not succeeding very well, but trying.

He stepped inside and a round of applause started, stopping him in his tracks. Even Ken stepped out of his office and joined in. She watched his face, saw that he was genuinely embarrassed. She wondered if he’d seen the latest update, which included the social media post with the photo someone—a tourist, she was guessing from the profile—had caught of the moment he’d made that salute to the statue of Asa Fuhrmann. And it had immediately been connected with the three videos that had already gone viral. The legend of Police Chief Shane Highwater was growing by leaps and bounds.

He gave them a sheepish smile and a rather bemused shake of his head. Ken crossed the office and held out a hand. Shane shook it, although he still looked a bit bemused.

“And what can the Defender do for the hometown hero today?” her boss asked.

“You can stop that cr—stuff, for starters,” Shane said. Lily had the oddest thought, wondering who had instilled those manners in him, given his mother had been gone since he was a kid. His father? Or was it simply respect for his position, and that he was on duty? “I had enough of it with people stopping me walking down the street.”

Ken just laughed at him. “Seriously, to what do we owe the honor?”

Shane grimaced, but said, “Actually, I wanted to talk to you.”

“All right, everyone, as you were,” Ken said to the room. The others returned to their tasks, but Lily kept watching. She assumed if it was something private, they would have taken it into Ken’s office.

“Have you seen your grandmother?” Shane asked.

Ken raised a brow. “I stopped by last night. Why?”

“And she seemed okay to you?”

“A little unsettled by it all still, but otherwise fine.” Ken looked worried now. “You think something’s wrong?”

“Not physically, but I stopped by to see her just now. And she said something about it being fun while it had lasted.”

“What?”

“She said she’d miss all the fuss, and seeing the town come together.”

Lily frowned, and walked over to the two men. “You mean the party?”

Shane nodded. “I asked her, but she said she was being a selfish old woman and wouldn’t say any more.
