Chapter 17

When they arrived at Haven’s home, Nova immediately walked to the back door and let Duke into the house. The dog was excited to see Nova but stopped only briefly to lick her hand before running to Bentley. The boy fell to his knees and began wrestling with the Pit as they both whined with joy.

“Would you like a cup of fresh coffee?” Haven offered.

“That does sound good.” Nova smiled as Bentley chased Duke around the coffee table.

“I’ll take our boys outside and see if they can run off some of that energy,” Nova laughed as she opened the door stepping back as Bentley and Duke flew past her.

“I’ll join you in just a minute,” Haven said.

Nova wanted to get outside to check the perimeter around Haven’s home. She had seen Borisyuk’s empty car parked on the street. That meant his partner was stalking Haven.

Bentley found a frisbee on the patio and tossed it toward Duke. The dog was smart enough not to jump but he did catch the low-flying disc. He carried the toy to Nova then ran into the center of the yard where he was joined by Bentley.

Nova tossed the disc into the air. To her surprise Bentley leaped high into the air and caught the frisbee with his teeth then ran around in a circle. Haven’s gasp behind her indicated that the boy’s mother was as surprised as Nova.

“I had no idea he could jump that high,” Haven laughed. “I thought we’d have coffee on the patio so our boys could play outside.”

“They are working off steam,” Nova noted sitting beside Haven on the patio sofa.

“Bentley is extremely athletic,” Nova commented. “Did you see how high he jumped to catch that frisbee?”

Haven nodded. Thankful that Nova didn’t add “with his teeth.”

Bentley dropped the frisbee in Nova’s lap and ran to stand beside Duke. The boy and the dog ran around in circles waiting for Nova to toss the disc. She sailed it high in the air giving Duke a chance to get under it. Although Bentley could easily grab the toy, he let Duke catch it.

“You are raising the nicest young man,” Nova complimented.

“That’s just his nature,” Haven noted. “He’s so sweet.”

As the time passed Bentley and Duke wore themselves out and went into the house leaving Haven and Nova alone on the patio.

“I’m going to the Houston Museum of Natural Science Saturday,” Nova said. “Would you and Bentley like to go with me. They have a dinosaur exhibit I want to see, and I think Bentley will enjoy it.”

“That would be lovely,” Haven smiled. “I have to work until noon, but after that we’re all yours.”

“If only,” Nova whispered.

“Nova,” Haven turned her face up to the blonde. As their lips met Nova heard footsteps on the patio. She shoved Haven to the concrete as the sound of a gunshot filled the night.

Protecting Haven with her own body Nova tried to ascertain where the shooter was. A shadow told her the man was on the other side of the sofa.
