JAN BRUEGHEL I THE ELDER (1568-1625) was the son of Pieter Brueghel the Elder. He painted flowers, jewellery and other material objects with such love and affection that he was nicknamed “Velvet” Brueghel.

FRANS SNYDERS (1579-1657) was a master at painting animals. He made them come alive on the canvas, and you felt like eating the fruit in his still lifes of a basket of fruit... His landscapes were also famous.

THE ART COLLECTION

In Rubens’ day there were no museums. Art was to be found in churches or in the homes of rich collectors. While Rubens painted religious subjects, he also produced other subjects in smaller formats to decorate drawing rooms or formal salons, or to add to collections of art and artefacts.
