Word had come that a supply train from the English base at Carlisle would be skirting the action at Dumfries, and heading toward the bastion of Dalswinton, certainly next on the list of fortifications to be fiercely attacked by Robert Bruce.

With the king's blessing, Jamie led a troop of ten hand- picked knights into the forest, where they backtracked first, found the trail the English supply train was taking, and then skirted ahead once again, finding the perfect area for an attack. There, the trail grew narrow, with heavy trees on either side, allowing for the attackers to swiftly take on the riders before they could amass in any number, or defend the supplies they carried.

He and Ragnor took to the oaks on either side at the precise point where they began the assault. The others were arrayed along the line at various advantage points. Once the attack had begun, they would rain down upon the English in quick unison.

They waited in learned patience. Then, they heard the first sounds of the caravan upon the trail. Jamie signaled to Ragnor, and they both prepared for the initial assault by stringing forest bows with slender arrows. When the first of the men appeared in the tight knot of the trail, Jamie let out a soft whistle. Before the English could begin to fathom what was happening, he and Ragnor let loose simultaneously with their arrows. Because the English were clad in full armor, their aim had to be perfect, catching their enemies high up on their throats.

The first two men fell without a whimper. Then, a cry of alarm rose, but it was short-lived, for arrows began to fly fast and furious from the trees. Once the English were aware of the attack, the Scotsmen began to fall from the trees, and in no time, the enemy scattered on the forest floor. Seven of their number cried out, begging for terms of surrender, and laying down their weapons. Jamie called out quickly that, in the name of Robert Bruce, all would then be spared.

He had commandeered a fine line of supplies. One wagon was filled with dried and salted pork and beef, another held a cache of extremely fine weapons, forged, apparently, by German masters. There were fine coats of mail, sheets of various body armor, and a treasure of gold coins as well. The men exalted in their find, stripped the surviving English of their armor and weaponry, and began the ride back to the king's position at Dumfries.

George, who had been going through the correspondence being sent on to the English strongholds and their commanders as they rode, told Jamie that he found a letter promising a second train of supplies, dated, and signed. He mulled the information, pleased to realize that they would most probably be able to seize upon those as well, since word could not get back to Carlisle in time to inform the leaders there that the first supplies had never arrived.

As he looked at another parchment, George grew silent.
