CHAPTER 27

Teddy Choi and Kristof Mendelsohn were packing their overnight bags at the hotel and preparing to dash back to the Taipei City airport for their flight away from Asia, somewhere they could take a breath and determine where they stood.

Over the past decade, Teddy Choi had rarely thought himself to be in danger. There had been tense negotiations with distributors over prices or delivery schedules. He had once cut off his largest dealer in Eastern Europe when he learned that the same man was also very involved in human trafficking. Not that Teddy himself wasn’t a criminal, but the moralistic slime that permeated human trafficking wasn’t good for business and added risk and exposure Red Dragon didn’t need. Choi received word that an Armenian gangster was about to send a hit squad to China if his shipments didn’t resume. However, before anything went any further, the man was killed by members of another gang who took over his business and swore never to engage in human trafficking. She wouldn’t last a minute before answering any question they posed. He knew that Ling had never divulged the nature of their business, their private partnership, but she knew the two men were very close. She knew of all the trips the three had taken together, and perhaps more damning, she knew of many of the trips that Choi had taken alone and had met some of the colorful characters the Gentleman Dealer did business with around the world.

Ling Chen had played an invaluable role in their security. In addition to being eyes and ears with all manner of law enforcement agencies in China, Chen had also befriended and ultimately hired Jon Stiles, Red Dragon’s head of security.

Teddy knew he had two problems, the first being that he needed security. He didn’t need an army, but he required Stiles with him, and right now. Stiles had been a British mercenary when Ling Chen brought him into the fold. He had served in the elite MI-6 intelligence unit until he was discharged under murky circumstances. However, he had still managed to get
