Lethbridge-Stewart woke with a start at 3:30am. The television still flickered in the corner, and as he came to his senses he realized he was slumped in his armchair.
Pulling himself upright, he rubbed his forehead, then switched the television off and climbed unsteadily to his feet. There was a scratching sound from the window, and Lethbridge-Stewart raised the blinds to find a soggy black cat huddled on the ledge outside.
âChorley, you poor old thing,â he said, sliding the window up to allow the grateful animal inside. âYouâve gone and got soaked again,â he said, picking up the cat who purred and pushed her head into his palm. âLetâs dry you off, hmm?â He carried the sodden cat into the small bathroom, where he dried her off with a hand towel, and carried her into the bedroom.
âIâm glad youâre here,â he told the cat as he lay down on the counterpane still fully dressed. The cat purred, and curled up beneath his arm as he scratched her head. A thought struck Lethbridge-Stewart, and he pulled his smartphone from his pocket again. Sorry about missing our last bridge game, he typed, but it would be lovely to see you next time you have a day off. Lots of love, Dad. x
He had put the phone down on the bedside table and turned over to go to sleep, when another idea occurred to him. Picking up the phone again, he opened the last message he had received from Vera, and pressed reply. Youâre welcome, and thanks for all the driving. Hope to see you soon⦠Alistair.
Cradling the phone in his hands, he stared at the glowing square of light in the darkness of his bedroom. Taking a deep breath, he typed âxâ at the end of the message, and pressed send.
âThis is exhausting, Chorley,â he said, and smiled as he lay back upon his pillow. The cat purred against his side, and he was soon fast asleep.
