INESSA

Kamenev is Trotsky’s brother-in-law. Can’t our great orator convince him?

NADYA

Not as easy as you think. If Ilyich can’t convince them, nobody will.

EXT./INT. PRIVATE HOUSE. KARPOVKA. CENTRAL COMMITTEE IN SESSION – NIGHT.

The mood is tense. Each arrives separately and enters the house. Ten present. Lenin arrives with wig but no beard. Zinoviev with beard but shaved head. On the face of it they appear calm. Trotsky enters the room and takes an empty place.

Sverdlov calls the meeting to order.

TROTSKY

Comrades, the Military Revolutionary Committee decided that any attempt to transfer three regiments, the ones that we control, out of the city will be resisted. There is no doubt Kornilov and his fellow Generals are preparing another assault. They, too, have realized that Kerensky is utterly useless. I think we have no option but to set the date for the insurrection.
