Chapter Ten

Reunion

The Year 1556 Anno Salvatoris

15 Years After the Invasion

Even after a day had passed, Tez hated everything about this room, this manor, this City.

Her arms and legs still pulsating with pain and exhaustion from the previous day’s battles, she sat in the corner of what she assumed to be Aritz’s chambers, leaning forward with elbows propped up against her knees, her chin resting atop her linked fingers. A musty stench lingered in the room, the air stale from the nearby smoke, overtaking what would have been the pleasant aroma of the southern seas had these Invaders not destroyed it.

She glanced about the room, the pervasive sound of overlapping conversations long since having faded from her recognition. Those who passed for Tribal leadership were huddled around the table at the center of the room, which carried a map of their Land, the south penned in tremendous detail while everything to the north of the Forest was little more than scribbles and vague shapes. The initial sight of it had sent a wave of angry nausea surging through Tez. There were plenty to whom she owed her fury beyond merely the Invaders, though she knew not where to start and where to end.

When could this all have been stopped? Could it have been stopped? Can it still be stopped? She glared at the Owl, still guised under the mask of Aritz a Mata, standing calmly in front of a large, ornate desk, its attention placed upon the face of a Sun Tribeswoman with whom Tez was unfamiliar. Teeth gritting, the question of whether this was indeed a turning point for the Tribes was one she was certain the Owl had the answer to, but was perplexed as to why no one was voicing the query to begin with.

Instead, all anyone recognized was the inevitability of the Invaders’ counterstrike. The danger of scholars being forced to do the work of warriors and strategists. Tawa stood across from the speaking Sun Tribeswoman, and beside him the Keeper Ko Zaran, but beyond them, Tez had not personally met any of the others present, and therefore was only trusting of Tawa and Zaran being worthy of speaking with any degree of authority.

For herself, she believed it necessary for her presence here, being the only remaining Bearsign, even if it was in name only. She could not argue against having a true warrior present, even if the peak of her fighting days were well past her already. The days of saving her sister’s skin, rather than the other way around as was the case the day before, were over. She knew not how best to acclimate to that just yet.

Sen’s absence was—for once—perplexing to her. Tez could hardly blame her for not wanting the responsibility of being part of this strategy meeting. Over these last days, such was only thrust upon her because of her ill-advised carousing with the Invaders a short time ago, and she seemed to have felt greater kinship to the Tribespeople she
