Overwhelmed by the revelation about Max, Anchor couldn’t speak, but stood there numb, trying to grasp the truth. But it was as if whatever it was skated out of reach. All this time, Max had been spying on him? Or was he more a guardian of some sort? His mom had watched over Crowne, known when the car he was in drove into the Potomac. If she hadn’t, he would’ve died. Thinking on that again, she’d predicted it, but that implied foreknowledge he wasn’t ready to accept.

“I have an idea …” Phoebe leaned over the worker and tapped Max’s shape on the screen. “If we can pick up on his frequency, then I bet we can pick up those of other employees. Knowing where Erica’s followers are would be incredible.”

“I think I can do that …” the worker said.

Several minutes passed in silence, windows flashing on the screen, then a new map formed and on it appeared hundreds of red dots.

“There they are,” Crowne said, “but wait …” His brow wrinkled. “What’s the one in D.C.?”

The worker zoomed in on it, and it formed in their midst. Crowne, in two steps, yanked a young man from his chair and mashed him to the wall.

“How’s it work?” he asked. “How does she communicate with you?”

The young man stared back defiant.

“And what does she want with us?” Crowne inhaled deep and answered his own question. “Our files. She’s had you put in a code so she can see everything. Hasn’t she?”

Though the young man didn’t speak, it was clear through his gaze that it was true.

“So how’s it done?” Crowne asked again. “She speaks to you?”

Working one hand free, the young man reached up to his left ear, scooped his fingers behind it, and removed a tiny circular disk no larger than a pinhead. He set it on the desktop. “She speaks directly to me, bypassing normal communications.”

Phoebe lifted the disk on her fingertip. “No cell phones. Just person-to-person. I had no idea things had gone that far.” She looked up at Crowne. “Shouldn’t we have him remove the code? If she’s looking at our files, then she’s after something, and we have sensitive information on there.”

Crowne pursed his lips in thought. “True, but we’ll leave it for now. We need to find out what’s been compromised and can use it to follow her tracks. Plus … I have an idea how we get hold of her.” His gaze met Anchor’s. “By now, she knows you’re here.” Crowne took the disc from Phoebe and displayed it. “We’ll draw her out.”

“How?” Anchor asked.

“We’re going to fake a little meet up. You, me, and our brothers. She’ll come find us then.” Crowne caught eyes with the worker. “Can you do it? Put us all at Linda’s Coffee & Tea on Fourteenth Street.”

The girl nodded.

The minutes passed in a flurry of keystrokes, things flashing on and off the screen, but at the end, she sat back, a smile on her face. “You are now officially all together.
