Overwhelmed by the revelation about Max, Anchor couldnât speak, but stood there numb, trying to grasp the truth. But it was as if whatever it was skated out of reach. All this time, Max had been spying on him? Or was he more a guardian of some sort? His mom had watched over Crowne, known when the car he was in drove into the Potomac. If she hadnât, he wouldâve died. Thinking on that again, sheâd predicted it, but that implied foreknowledge he wasnât ready to accept.
âI have an idea â¦â Phoebe leaned over the worker and tapped Maxâs shape on the screen. âIf we can pick up on his frequency, then I bet we can pick up those of other employees. Knowing where Ericaâs followers are would be incredible.â
âI think I can do that â¦â the worker said.
Several minutes passed in silence, windows flashing on the screen, then a new map formed and on it appeared hundreds of red dots.
âThere they are,â Crowne said, âbut wait â¦â His brow wrinkled. âWhatâs the one in D.C.?â
The worker zoomed in on it, and it formed in their midst. Crowne, in two steps, yanked a young man from his chair and mashed him to the wall.
âHowâs it work?â he asked. âHow does she communicate with you?â
The young man stared back defiant.
âAnd what does she want with us?â Crowne inhaled deep and answered his own question. âOur files. Sheâs had you put in a code so she can see everything. Hasnât she?â
Though the young man didnât speak, it was clear through his gaze that it was true.
âSo howâs it done?â Crowne asked again. âShe speaks to you?â
Working one hand free, the young man reached up to his left ear, scooped his fingers behind it, and removed a tiny circular disk no larger than a pinhead. He set it on the desktop. âShe speaks directly to me, bypassing normal communications.â
Phoebe lifted the disk on her fingertip. âNo cell phones. Just person-to-person. I had no idea things had gone that far.â She looked up at Crowne. âShouldnât we have him remove the code? If sheâs looking at our files, then sheâs after something, and we have sensitive information on there.â
Crowne pursed his lips in thought. âTrue, but weâll leave it for now. We need to find out whatâs been compromised and can use it to follow her tracks. Plus ⦠I have an idea how we get hold of her.â His gaze met Anchorâs. âBy now, she knows youâre here.â Crowne took the disc from Phoebe and displayed it. âWeâll draw her out.â
âHow?â Anchor asked.
âWeâre going to fake a little meet up. You, me, and our brothers. Sheâll come find us then.â Crowne caught eyes with the worker. âCan you do it? Put us all at Lindaâs Coffee & Tea on Fourteenth Street.â
The girl nodded.
The minutes passed in a flurry of keystrokes, things flashing on and off the screen, but at the end, she sat back, a smile on her face. âYou are now officially all together.
